Job Description :

The Position

The Research Informatics and Software Engineering Department (RI&SE) within Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED) seeks a Senior Informatics Systems Analyst or a Senior Software Engineer to lead software development efforts supporting lab automation within the Research organization at Genentech. You will play a critical role in delivering transformational software that enables the discovery of life-changing therapies. You will be responsible for understanding the needs of our scientists, who convert research discoveries into novel medicines, and collaborate to develop a comprehensive ecosystem of applications and tools to record, organize, store, secure, and access data in meaningful ways. You will understand how IT systems fit our scientific business needs based upon internal and external business opportunities, define product vision, elicit requirements for new systems development, direct software teams with implementation, and monitor effectiveness. You will collaborate closely with both our project stakeholders and technical leads to gather user stories, design applications, and guide the functionality of IT systems across the full software development lifecycle by leveraging your specialized expertise and/or deep knowledge of the domain to solve complex problems with innovative solutions. You will ensure that our solutions fit appropriately into our information ecosystem and ensure the integrity of our data architecture. Applicants should have an agile mindset, and have the ability to communicate difficult concepts and influence others in order to solve real business problems and deliver transformative impact to the business unit. You should be able to work in a fluid and dynamic environment, and should have a strong desire to pursue creative solutions with broad guidance and a high degree of independence.

Who You Are

In hiring new employees, we look for people who are inspired by our mission and can thrive with the collaborative, rigorous, and entrepreneurial spirit of our company culture. Because we know that employees are critical to our success in bringing novel medicines to patients, we are dedicated to remaining a great place to work and to providing employees with programs, services, and benefits that allow them to bring the best to the organization and to their personal lives.

The ideal candidate will satisfy many of the following requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher, with applicable experience in product management, business analysis, or software engineering

  • Significant scientific and/or laboratory experience, especially related to drug development.

  • At least 10 years of experience working as a product manager, business analyst, or software engineer involved in all phases of the software development process, including: requirements gathering, design, implementation, testing, release, and maintenance.

  • Relevant experience working closely with scientific and informatics stakeholders to understand their informatics needs, and subsequently defining complex system requirements, scope, objectives, and key results in the context of larger organizational goals.

  • Ensure we are bringing the greatest value to our team and our collaborators by working with the team to properly align and prioritize work with our key stakeholders.

  • Engage with scientific stakeholders to understand complex workflows (both ‘as-is’ and ‘to-be’), and direct efforts to harmonize and optimize business processes across teams and business units to reduce the complexity of software solutions.

  • Experience in documenting detailed software requirements, user stories, business, and/or software specifications for both custom and Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) systems.

  • Ability to collaborate with lab automation engineers and software engineers to translate lab automation processes to detailed software requirements.

  • Experience organizing and directing large, globally distributed, and agile software development teams, either as a Product Owner, Technology Lead, or Group Leader to solve complex, high-risk problems with innovative solutions.

  • Experience working in a life sciences or biopharmaceutical environment such as early-stage research, drug discovery, or other biological sciences discipline is preferred.

  • Demonstrated success working initiatives of high complexity, uncertainty, and risk with minimal guidance and direction.

  • Able to effectively build trust, manage, inspire, and influence globally distributed and cross-functional teams.

  • Able to present your work, both verbally and in writing, to diverse audiences including scientific stakeholders, technical teams, as well as research leadership.
