Position Details

Salary scale shown is minimum pay rate, and the maximum pay rate including premium pay and highest longevity pay, applicable only after 20 years of service.

The staff hired into this position will be brought in at Step 1* of the 6-step scale, which is $5964.74/month (~$34.41/hour). The schedule for this position will be Monday- Friday 6:00am- 3:30pm with every other Monday off.*

This position is represented by Teamsters Local Union No. 117, and the current Collective Bargaining Agreement is effective 1/1/23 - 12/31/25.
The following future pay increases have been negotiated:
September 1, 2023: 3% increase
January 1, 2024: 3% increase
January 1, 2025: 3% increase

The City of Auburn Public Works department is looking for a talented Mechanic to add to our team! This position requires skilled work in the repair and maintenance of automotive and specialized maintenance equipment including both gas and diesel engines, performing in-depth diagnostics using scan tools and or laptops to efficiently and effectively repair a variety of systems to include* fuel injection, diesel exhaust fluid systems, tire pressure monitor systems, supplemental restraint systems, anti-lock brake systems, as well as the welding of broken parts and fabrication of new parts* as required.

Note: All required tools will be provided by the City to complete all job functions and required trainings will be paid by the City.

Primary Duties
Primary Duties

  • Troubleshoots equipment or system failures and assures proper corrective actions are implemented.
  • Diagnoses malfunctions on gas and/or diesel engines, heavy and specialized equipment, pumps, generators, and other equipment; makes repairs by adjusting or replacing parts such as tires, belts, axles, hydraulic cylinders, carburetor, electrical wiring, starters, etc.
  • Performs tune-ups, oil changes, and emission control repairs; adjusts brakes; lubricates vehicles; performs electronic tune-ups.
  • Observes, compares, and monitors objects and data to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards.
  • Makes emergency repairs in the field or in the shop on equipment such as backhoes, graders, automobiles, dump trucks, pumps, and generators.
  • Compiles and maintains permanent records using both computerized and manual systems.
  • Works effectively under pressure and with frequent interruptions.
  • Works courteously and effectively with public officials, citizens, contractors, vendors, supervisor, and other employees, both in person and over the telephone; assists them with a wide variety of information pertaining to City and department.

Minimum Qualifications
We are looking for candidates who have:

  • *

High school diploma, or equivalent,* supplemented by automotive repair courses at the vocational school level AND* two years related work experience*

OR

  • a combination of education and experience which would provide the applicant with the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job.

AND

  • Possesses and retains valid state driver's license without impending loss at time of appointment.
  • Valid Washington State Commercial Driver's License or must obtain one within twelve months as a condition of employment which is paid by the City.
  • Valid and current ASE certification in the following areas: Suspension and Steering, Brakes, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Heating and Air Conditioning, and Engine Performance OR must obtain within twelve months, or whenever the next test is scheduled, whichever is later (and keep current thereafter), as a condition of employment.
  • This position will be required to be fingerprinted and complete the CJIS (Criminal Justice Information Services) Security Certification Test to be allowed to view sensitive information and have unescorted access while at the Police Department (per Washington State Patrol ACCESS unit).
